Vocalist: Hardev Singh Meharban
Album: Puggan bunn ke kesri laareh
Year: 1988

Interpreted by Harwinder Singh Mander for naujawani

The title song from this independent album is a powerful, evocative ode performed to a popular Punjabi folk tune. The vocals were provided by Hardev Singh Meharban with music by Deep Sood. Production and marketing came from one Kashmir Singh of Huddersfield, the album releasing early in 1988. The song emulates the opening number from the 1980 Punjabi cinema smash hit ‘Chann Pardesi’; each line of the lyrics is sung by a chorus of male vocalists who break up the phrases, before the main vocalist sings the line in its entirety (as republished below). The work is written from the perspective of an unknown eyewitness to the resurgance of Sikh spirit in 1980s Punjab, proffering a range of observations on the freedom fighters who have taken up arms against the State. The writer eloquently illustrates Sikh ideas on what it means to devote oneself to the cause of freedom, and the inevitability of death that comes from standing against oppression.

Tying saffron-coloured dastaars, the grooms have stepped onto the path of marriage with their bride called fate (death)
Realise this, dear soul of mine

Now your Sikhs have awoken Guru Ji, the oppressors have taken flight from the arena
Realise this, dear soul of mine

Brave warrior-poets look beautiful having adorned the kirpan and dastaar (taking khande-di-pahul)
Realise this, dear soul of mine

Blessed are those lioness-mothers advocating the sacrifices of their offspring in the righteous cause (the Sikh way of life)
Realise this, dear soul of mine

I have beheld with my own eyes the sisters of our martyred brothers sing the songs of their wedding procession to marry death
Realise this, dear soul of mine

Your victory (in life) is assured dear Khalsa, see that you don’t falter on the course you have chosen
Dearest, beautiful Khalsa

May the True King (Guru Gobind Singh) grace our lives with a vision of the House of Guru Nanak
Realise this, dear soul of mine

Those Khalsei who hold self-respect and dignity in high regard have left their household lives behind in devotion to this cause
Realise this, dear soul of mine

Oh realise this, dear soul of mine
