This dhadi vaar was penned by Mandeep Singh Rangi of the Pohir Dhadi Jatha and was released to mark the centenery of Kartar Singh Sarabha’s shaheedi. This ode to Sikh shaheeds brings into question the rewriting of history that has minimised the role played by Sikhs in extinguishing British rule over Punjab. In each verse prominent Sikh freedom fighters of the early Twentieth Century are highlighted before asking why their names have been forgotten, but those of others (non-Sikhs) have been immortalised. Sikhs constituted the majority of long-term incarcerations and executions at the hands of the British in Punjab; ultimately, this vaar asks the question, what ‘freedom’ did the Sikh nation gain when the British finally left?

ਸੁਣ ਸ਼ੇਰ ਗਰਜਣਾਂ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੰਡਨ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਕੰਬੀ ਸੀ
ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਾਂਸੀ ਦੇ-ਦੇ ਕੇ ਕੁਲ ਗੋਰੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਹੰਬੀ ਸੀ

ਇਕ ਚਾਚਾ ਸੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਦਾਂ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਕੀਹਨੇ ਕਰਨਾ ਯਾਦ ਕਦੋਂ
ਉਹ ਉਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਹੀ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਸੀ ਸੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਦੇਸ਼ ਅਜਾਦ ਜਦੋਂ
ਇਕ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੁੱਲੇ ਅੱਗ ਪਈ ਹੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਗੁੱਲ ਗਏ

ਜਦ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਤਿਸਰ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ’ਤੇ ਲਹੂ ਸੱਭ ਦਾ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਡੁੱਲਿਆ ਸੀ
ਲਿਆ ਬਦਲਾ ਲੰਡਨ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਇੱਕੀ ਸਾਲ ਨਾ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਸੀ

When the ground at Amritsar was drenched by the blood of all
One man gained vengeance all the way in London 21 years later

ਅਸੀਂ ਝੁੱਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫਾਂਸੀ ਨੂੰ ਜੱਫੇ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਸੀ
ਜੇਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੈਦਾਂ ਕਟੀਆਂ ਸੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਮੋੜ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਸੀ
ਜਦ ਸੀ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਤਾਂ ਹੀਰੇ ਸੀ ਹੁਣ ਬਣ ਚੁੱਲੇ ਦੇ ਗੁੱਲ ਗਏ
ਸਭ ਜ਼ੁਲਮੀ ਝੱਖੜ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਹੀ ਕੌਮ ’ਤੇ ਝੁੱਲ ਗਏ

We never bow to rulers, and embrace the hangman’s noose
We gladly suffered false sentences, imprisoned to reverse the fortunes of our people (this is also a nod to the lyricist Mandeep Singh Rangi)
When we were enslaved there were diamonds amongst us, now our light has been extinguished
The tyrannical storms of the World have gathered to rage on the Sikh Qaum
