Lyricist: Balhar Singh Randhawa
Vocalist: Manjeet Singh
Album:
Year: 1986

Interpreted by Harwinder Singh Mander for naujawani

In the years that followed the invasion of the Darbar Sahib, Sikhs were left under no illusion about what was taking place; that frustration of having engaged with the political process for decades and then still being coloured as separatists despite being on the receiving end of near-annihilation, was captured in the thought-provoking words of these verses by the UK’s Balhar Singh Randhawa in 1986. The chorus makes reference to a number of incidents in which the Guru Granth Sahib was set alight and asks whether the demands of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution are of any value any longer (the return of Chandigarh to Punjab alone, and review of redistribution decisions made for Punjab’s river waters).

If the Guru Granth Sahib is set alight on this land where Guru Nanak walked,
What use is it to regain Chandigarh and the rivers that from here are born.

With this river water we cared for crops of wheat as if they were our daughters
But the State bulls devoured it all and our dignity was slaughtered
Now father cries sat in the village square draped by the old, torn shawl
What use is it to regain Chandigarh and the rivers that from here are born.

Hundreds of thousands of spirited sons have now left their homes
Their betrothals lost, engagements returned, our blessings for their marriages go to waste
Oh leaders of the Panth don’t forget these sacrifices made by our beloveds
What use is it to regain Chandigarh and the rivers that from here are born.

Finally it seemed a reversal of fortunes had come – the Sant stood up and spoke
His brow sweat, teeth ground, eyes shimmered… he awoke
Like lightning he stormed with the spear in his hands
What use is it to regain Chandigarh and the rivers that from here are born.

Since the beginning Anandpur has roared in the face of the might from Delhi
Just as the fight was not lost on the ridge of Khidrana, despite being outnumbered
Why not then, today, gain strength to tackle the aggressors of the Hind?
What use is it to regain Chandigarh and the rivers that from here are born.

The Tenth Master sat at Deena Kangra and there he proclaimed it would be the end of the Empire
Forever and ever more the Khalsa will be victorious – this is now in our DNA
Awake Randhawa, salute our Master who has set us on this great path
What use is it to regain Chandigarh and the rivers that from here are born.

If the Guru Granth Sahib is set alight on this land where Guru Nanak walked,
What use is it to regain Chandigarh and the rivers that from here are born.
