This song comes from an album produced by German Sikhs as part of the International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF) series titled ‘Soora Sau Pehchaniyeh’ in the late 1980s. This particular album – volume 4 – was dedicated to a community leader by the name of Joginder Singh Malhi who died tragically in Germany, as well as more generally for those who had given their lives to the cause in Punjab. Although this album shipped without a track-listing, it contained a myriad of gems sung eloquently by a Granthi and Kirtani, Bhai Manjeet Singh. Penned by his associate Kulwant Singh, this song advises Sikhs to become Khalsei and recognise the negative elements that surround the community, trying to blacken the name of the Panth and mislead individuals. It’s rustic form and catchy melody stands the test of time, making the lyrics to this song just as relevant today as they were some thirty years ago.

We live in times when shady characters cause fights between Khalsei
They instigate the deeds but implicate the Khalsa as the doers

ਵਸਦੇ ਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਪਸ਼ਤਾਂਉਂਦੇ ਨੇ
ਐਸੇ ਠੱਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਦੇ ਅੱਖ ਨਾ ਮਿਲਾ
Thugs thrive on destruction, they do what they do for monetary gain
They find no solace or contentment, instead they live in regret
Don’t even make eye contact with such thugs
